Conference "Professional Supervision: Common threads, different patterns" 2010

Meg Bond (UK), Pre-conference Workshop Thursday 29th April - Skills of in-depth reflection

Meg BondA 'gym workout' for supervisees and clinical supervisors, whether beginners or experienced.

Aims

This one-day workshop can be taken at two levels:

1. as an initial personal and interpersonal skills training for people who are new to reflective professional supervision

2. as a review of skills for supervisees and supervisors from any profession who are familiar with a reflective style of supervision.

Pre-workshop reading

This will outline frameworks for identifying skills of the:

  • supervisee
  • one-to-one supervisor
  • supervision group participant
  • supervision group facilitator.

These materials will preview the about-to-be-published, 2nd edition of 'Skills of Clinical Supervision for Nurses - a Guide for Supervisee, Clinical Supervisors and Managers' by Meg Bond and Stevie Holland, published by Open University Press. While this book is written for nurses, the first edition has been widely used on supervision training courses across the health, social care and counselling professions.

Some of the supervisor skills frameworks are adapted from John Heron's 'Helping the Client', published in 2001 by Sage.

Learning methods

During the workshop, the emphasis will be on taking part in structured experiential exercises. The 'gym' metaphor is about working through the initial 'this isn't real' feeling and engaging fully in the exercises, to stretch and strengthen your skills in the roles involved in professional supervision. The activities will not be role-plays: they will be based on real-life topics for reflection. They will include working in pairs, threes and small groups and you will be invited to identify your strengths and to focus on stretching yourself in the areas you could most usefully develop, whatever your level of experience.

Topics

Some areas which can be explored include:

  • creating the conditions for in-depth reflection
  • rights and responsibilities of the supervisee and supervisor
  • negotiating a contract
  • logical, intuitive, emotional and action-planning skills of in-depth reflection
  • facilitating in-depth reflection through support, catalytic, challenging and informative skills
  • group supervision as 'advanced' supervision
  • group participation and group facilitation skills
  • structures for group supervision
  • pitfalls in being a supervisee, one-to-one supervisor, supervision group participant, supervision group facilitator.

Follow-up

You will be provided with self-assessment and feedback tools to develop and evaluate your professional supervision.

Some feedback from previous workshop participants:

"Now I know why some of the supervision I've had or given over the last 26 years was rubbish, and why some was brilliant".

"I didn't realise I could have so much power as a supervisee or how to get so much out of supervision. I'm going back to sort out something better".
