Gaylene Stevens was born and raised in the deep-south in a small town called Tuatapere. On leaving school she moved to Christchurch to follow a clerical cadetship with Maori Affairs in the early eighties and worked within the Government and Community sectors. The early nineties was the beginning of her social work journey when she entered the social work field as a volunteer at Rehua Marae in Christchurch. Her journey has evolved a lot since that time and she is now currently employed with Ngapuhi Iwi Social Services in the Mid North as a supervisor of Social Workers in Schools.

Gaylene has a Bachelor of Arts double majoring in Maori and Education and she has recently completed a Masters in Social Work (Applied) with Massey University and within that a research report on 'Magical moments in Supervision'. Further relevant tools that she has gather for her kete come from Dynamics of Whanaungatanga with Pa Henare Tait, Mauri Ora with Te Korowai Aroha and Manaaki Kau with Te Awhi Paa.
